The Southwest Washington County Region: The Opportunity of Interstate 70

Our area can be uniquely characterized as the “western gateway” of Washington County, with 1.35 Million vehicles traveling through on I-70 and the National Road every month. This 15-mile corridor represents immense opportunity.

Yet without a coordinated effort across the small communities in our region, we have had limited success in capturing attention and the economic benefits that come with it.

From Exit 1 in historic West Alexander, to Exit 6 in Claysville – as the only main street business district along I-70 from the West Virginia border to Washington – we have the opportunity to:

  • offer a friendly welcome with a one-of-a-kind local experience;
  • promote local attractions and draw visitors to county events;
  • capture tourism dollars from surrounding states and counties.

We have so much to offer as a region: outdoor activities, home cooked meals, and a unique traditional downtown shopping experience. Together, our small communities can be a big draw to millions of potential visitors.
