Bull Run Floodplain Restoration & Nature Play Area – Lewisburg, Union County, PA

HRG assisted with the design of a floodplain restoration and nature play area in Hufnagle Park. We also designed a shared-use path that extends the Buffalo Valley Rail Trail southeast to Bucknell University.

To restore the floodplain, we naturalized approximately 500 linear feet of streambank in Bull Run/Limestone Run. We also developed a hydrologic and hydraulic model to inform stream channel design and coordinated with the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Association on deed restrictions for property included in the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.

This project represents the first phase of the Bull Run Greenway Master Plan, a holistic vision by BSA/LA and LandStudies, Inc. that simultaneously addresses flood concerns, improves water quality, enhances recreation, and improves connectivity between community assets. It is a model for how projects can serve recreation, environmental, social, and economic needs at the same time.
