Conewago Creek Restoration Wins Premier Project Award
February 17, 2022 /
Congratulations to our client Londonderry Township, who received a Dauphin County Premier Project Award today for stream restoration efforts at Conewago Creek. They were honored in the “Growing Within Our Environment” category, and judges had the following to say about the project:
“An outstanding project that will have widespread impact on improving water quality and reducing stream runoff”
“An excellent example of a regional effort with inter-municipal cooperation and the involvement of public and private partners.”
“A good case study for others to replicate and a model for stream restorations anywhere”
The project involves restoring wetlands and removing 125,000 cubic yards of legacy sediment from a section of Conewago Creek in order to return it to historic conditions. This will increase flood resiliency, improve water quality, provide healthy wildlife habitats, and enhance recreational opportunity for residents who fish in this designated trout-stocked fishery or connect to the Conewago Recreation Trail for walking, jogging, cycling, and cross-country skiing. The project will also protect area farms from erosion and help both Londonderry and Mt. Joy Townships meet their MS4 requirements.
Many partners came together to make this project happen, including Londonderry and Mt. Joy Townships, the Dauphin County and Lancaster County Conservation Districts, Penn State Agriculture Center, the USDA’s Long-Term Agroecosystem Research Network, and LandStudies, Inc. We’re proud to have been able to work with them all to make this progress possible. Congratulations to everyone involved and to all of the other winners today. And thank you to the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission for bringing us together to celebrate so many great projects around the region.
