Richard L. Shireman Park
HRG helped the township develop a 30+ acre agricultural property into a community park with both active and passive recreation areas for residents of all ages to enjoy. We developed the initial conceptual design of the park and a business plan for the property as part of a funding application to the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program. When funding was secured, we assisted with design, permitting, bidding, and construction administration.
The park includes:
- 4 pickleball courts
- A softball field
- Playground structures for 5-12 year olds and 1-3 year olds
- 6,500 feet of walking trails
The site also includes an ADA-compliant parking lot with 90 spaces and a new paved access drive. Low-impact design strategies preserve the natural features of the site by minimizing grading, encouraging natural meadows, and restoring the riparian buffer along an on-site stream. Stormwater best management practices will be incorporated throughout the site, and natural landscaping with native plants will reduce water and maintenance needs long-term.
A natural meadow and butterfly/pollinator gardens provide a place for residents to connect with nature, and educational signage helps visitors understand local ecology. The park is designed to promote health and wellness while preserving open space in keeping with the history of the area.
