Spring Creek Interceptor
The Spring Creek Interceptor Upgrade Project was initiated to address capacity limitations in the existing sewer system driven by increased flow from the tributary service area including the large expansion of the Tröegs Independent Brewing facility. HRG evaluated the interceptor from manhole HMO-1B, near the connection with Tröegs’ force main, downstream to SCI-41B at the Hershey Company’s historic cocoa bean silos. This evaluation included updates to GIS mapping, hydraulic modeling and flow projections, and a comparison of construction alternatives to provide the most technically and financially feasible project. Based on the evaluation results, HRG replaced the existing interceptor with a combination of in-kind replacement and with a new alignment. This included the replacement of a section of interceptor piping that was cast into a pedestrian maintenance access bridge with a new elevated crossing adjacent to the bridge. Throughout construction HRG worked with DTMA, Hershey Entertainment & Resorts, and Pennsylvania American Water to navigate numerous challenges, including navigating behind residential complexes, crossing Spring Creek, and coordinating with industrial facilities in Hershey with limited public utility information.
