Penn Hills Senior High School Named Outstanding High School Design

HRG is proud to announce that Penn Hill Senior High School has been honored as an Outstanding High School Design by American School & University Magazine.  HRG served as the civil and site design engineer on this project alongside the architectural team at Architectural Innovations, LLC.

The 301,000 square foot facility seamlessly integrates technology into the classroom and incorporates many green design principles to help the school district lower its energy costs.

Because the new building was built on the same site as the existing building, HRG had to carefully phase the development of the site in order to avoid disrupting school activities.  Once the new building was complete, students were transitioned to that facility, the previous building was demolished, and site work began for athletic facilities and additional parking.

HRG’s project manager Jim Feath said, “It was an honor to work on this project and be a part of Architectural Innovations’ team.  We’re proud of the facility we were able to create together.”

American School & University Magazine assembles a distinguished panel of education administrators, facility professionals and architects to select the best in school and university designs from that year.  Penn Hills Senior High School was one of seven high schools across the United States cited by the panel as an Outstanding High School Design.

Congratulations to our partners at Architectural Innovations on this achievement!”

HRG Receives PSMJ Premier Award for Client Satisfaction

Premier AwardHRG recently conducted a client satisfaction survey using a third-party provider, PSMJ Resources, a leading authority, publisher, and consultant on the effective management of architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) firms. Results from the survey were overwhelmingly positive when comparing HRG against others in the industry. Overall, 95% of survey respondents rated HRG as either meeting or exceeding expectations in areas such as helpfulness, responsiveness, quality, accuracy, schedule, budget, and scope/fees.

As a result of these high ratings, PSMJ awarded HRG the 2015 Premier Award for Client Satisfaction. The award recognizes firms that provide their clients with top quality communications, impressive performance, and cost effective solutions. Only 19 companies received the award out of more than 100 AEC firms that participated in this survey.

Kirk Stoner, Cumberland County’s Director of Planning, was one of the surveyed clients, and he said:

“I would strongly recommend HRG to anyone. Their superior work quality ensures that work is done right the first time, and permitting agency reviews rarely return findings. Their customer service model is also second to none. If issues arise – day or night, weekday or weekend – HRG stands ready to assist at a moment’s notice. HRG delivers the peace of mind desired by every client.”

Cranberry Township Manager Jerry Andree also participated in the survey and said:

“HRG personnel work closely and seamlessly with our own in-house engineers and technical professionals.  Their understanding of our philosophy and operations are at a consistently high level.  As a result, we regard HRG as a valued contributor to Cranberry’s success.”

HRG’s President and CEO Robert Grubic feels this award is a recognition of the hard work and expertise of the company’s staff, “Our primary objective at HRG is to ensure that we’re meeting the needs of our clients. Our staff works tirelessly to provide the highest quality product and meet our clients’ schedule – even under the tightest timeframes.  This award and the comments from our clients in the survey are a testament to these efforts.”

Van Voorhis Trailhead Project Creates Recreational Resource Out of Former Brownfield

VV_100_2311HRG is proud to have worked with the Monongahela River Trails Conservancy on converting a remediated brownfield site into a popular trailhead on the Mon River Rail-Trail in Star City, West Virginia.  Formerly the site of a glass manufacturing facility, Monongalia County Commission completed remediation of the site in 2012, paving the way for this formerly contaminated property to be converted into a valuable recreational resource for one of the fastest-growing residential areas in the region.

HRG provided engineering services to the Mon River Trails Conservancy (MRTC) to double the rail-trail parking on the former Quality Glass Company site  and install the first “Sweet Smelling Toilet” along the nearly 4-mile long trail.  This waterless toilet was originally designed by the U.S. Forest Service, and, when properly sited and vented, eliminates the odor and insect problems typically associated with traditional outhouse facilities.

The Van Voorhis Trailhead project was a collaboration of many community partners, including the Town of Star City, the Monongalia County Commission, the North Central Brownfield Center, the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, the West Virginia Department of Highways and the Mon River Trails Conservancy.

It was partially funded by a grant from the Federal Highway Administration’s Recreational Trails Program, as administered by the West Virginia Department of Transportation, Division of Highways.

Herbert, Rowland & Grubic, Inc. (HRG) is pleased to announce that our project, the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute, was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Lancaster County Planning Commission at its Envision Leadership Awards Program on March 24 at the Manheim Township Public Library.

These awards recognize those in the community who embrace smart growth concepts and demonstrate the advantages of good planning.

The Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute provides a holistic approach to cancer treatment by combining multiple support services with the full suite of medical specialties under one roof in order to treat the patient’s body and spirit as one. The 70,000 square-foot, two-story building is part of Lancaster General Health’s Suburban Outpatient Pavilion.

As the civil engineer for this project, HRG worked with LGH and its entire team to incorporate many green and sustainable components into the design such as:

  •  A curved glass building facade with a southern exposure that promotes passive heating and cooling and natural lighting.
  • Trees to reduce the heat island effect.
  • Exterior lighting designed to eliminate off-site light pollution.
  • A stone base for the paving that used recycled site materials.
  • Eleven rain gardens and eleven bioswales to promote sustainable stormwater management.
  • A 10,000 gallon cistern to gather rainwater for site irrigation.

HRG’s Projects Recognized with 2014 Dauphin County Premier Project Awards

Two of Herbert, Rowland & Grubic, Inc.’s (HRG) projects received 2014 Dauphin County Premier Project Awards. On Tuesday, January 13, 2015, Dauphin County Commissioners and the Dauphin County Planning Commission held the third annual awards event to recognize improvements that promote smart growth and revitalization within local communities.

HRG is proud to have provided engineering, surveying, and related services throughout the planning, design, and construction of the following award-winning projects.

Derry Township’s recently improved PA 743 and U.S. Route 422 historic square
The Hershey Square, was honored in the “Revitalization” category for projects above $500,000. This large-scale $13 million project is the first phase of a comprehensive plan to upgrade the existing 100-year-old transportation system within the world-renowned Hershey, Pennsylvania. Vast improvements were incorporated to keep pace with the increased traffic flow resulting from this thriving community and popular tourist destination.

Dauphin County Industrial Development Authority’s Solar Farm was recognized in the “Infrastructure” category. This project advances the use of alternative energy in Central Pennsylvania through the creation of one of the largest municipally-owned solar generation farms in Pennsylvania. This initiative is decreasing dependence on fossil fuels and generating revenue to significantly offset the County’s operational costs by 40%.

“We extend our congratulations to Derry Township and Dauphin County Industrial Development Authority for their forward-thinking approach and to improving the wellbeing of their communities,” stated Brian D. Emberg, retired Senior Vice President at HRG. “It was a sincere honor to be a part of these commendable initiatives.”
