The Arboretum at Penn State’s Pollinator and Bird Garden
The Arboretum at Penn State is a world-class facility, simultaneously supporting students and faculty while attracting 150,000 tourists each year. The university wanted to expand the botanic garden to provide unsurpassed research opportunities and bring the general community closer to nature.
We served as civil engineer for this expansion, which increases the size of the garden by 60%, and includes:
- more than 100,000 plants
- three water features
- a bird blind
- honey bee observation hive
- wetlands, woodland, fruit orchard, and meadow
The diversity of habitats is designed to attract all the region’s native pollinator insects and as many bird species as possible. It also shows the public the incredible biodiversity Pennsylvania has to offer. Our services on this project included civil engineering, site permitting, bidding, and construction administration. We also designed stormwater management facilities that use a natural, regional recharge area.
