Siebert Park Stream Restoration, Trail, and Kayak Launch

This project initially involved 1,800 linear feet of stream restoration to help the borough meet its MS4 Pollutant Reduction Plan (PRP) requirements. An unpaved trail along the stream was realigned, re-graded, and paved to make it ADA-accessible, and a concrete kayak launch was built to access the Conodoguinet Creek. (Gravel parking lots at both ends of the trail were also upgraded for ADA accessibility.) These improvements will enrich recreational opportunities for Camp Hill residents and reduce sediment in Blackberry Spring Run (helping the borough meet its MS4 Pollutant Reduction Plan requirements). The project is a great example of the synergistic relationship between environmental goals and recreational program goals, demonstrating the value communities can get when thinking about them both together.

The stream restoration included stabilizing the edges of the creek with rocks, grass, trees, and small shrubs to protect against erosion. Floodplain functions were enhanced with step pools, riffles, and three bankfull benches. A 35-foot-wide riparian buffer was planted on both sides of the stream, and new wildflowers, shrubs, and meadows were planted throughout the project area.

Educational signage was installed along the trail and edges of the stream, and access points were added so that students from a nearby elementary school can wade into the stream for educational exploration.
